Reading Strategies

The following links can lead you to various instructional reading strategies to use in the classroom.

MyRead. Strategies for teaching reading in the middle years. Strategies are based on the Luke and Freebody four resource model. Information on explicit teaching, scaffolding learning, monitoring, and classroom organization.  MyRead supports struggling readers in grades 4-9.

Florida Online Reading. This site features a reading strategy each month with an archive of past selections Strategies are explained and graphic organizers are included.

ReadingQuest. Focuses on reading strategies to use in the content area, particularly social studies. Has instructions and graphic organizers for nearly 30 different strategies.

Instructional Strategies Online. Sponsored by Saskatoon Public Schools, this site features instructional strategies to support the following methods: direct/ indirect instruction, experiential learning, independent study, and interactive instruction.

Reading Strategies: Scaffolding students' interactions with texts. These strategies, geared for older students, are categorized for before, during and after use in the reading event.

The Reading Lady.  This site has descriptions of various strategies to increase comprehension.  Some graphic organizers are included

Just Read Now! Categorizes reading strategies by discussion, active reading, vocabulary, and organization. Each category lists strategies, teaching lessons, links to more information.

 Laura Chandler's Teaching Resources.  This site has information to help implement a balanced reading program.  There are literary lessons for literature circles, reading programs, and reading workshop.  Graphic organizers included.

 Tools for Reading, Writing, & Thinking. Catagorized by reading or writing, these graphic organizers are designed to help organize complex ideas and scaffold student interaction with texts.

 Read-Write-Think. Sponsored by the International Reading Association, this site offers lesson plans and interactive graphic organizers for literacy engagements.

 Scholastic Teacher Tool Kit.  This website is sponsored by Scholastic books and features online activities, lesson plans, teaching strategies and graphic organizers for teachers.

How-To-Study.com. A study skills resource site. Features printable study skills and strategies. Worth noting.

 America Reads Challenge: A training Manual. Strategies adapted for tutors, basically an entire training manual online.

 Kentucky Virtual Library.  This interactive site helps children learn how to do research.

 Education Place. This is a list of graphic organizers to use in reading lessons.

 Teacher Vision. This site has multiple resources for teachers.  This page links to their list of printable graphic organizers. Offers a free trial for educators

 edHelper.com. These are great graphic organizers for young learners.

 Carol Hurst's Children's Literature Site. This site has a plethora of information to encourage the use of authentic literature in the classroom. Book reviews,  reading in the content areas, text sets, author studies, and professional resources are included.
